Case Study: From Grime to Luster

In a recent restoration project, a new Dumond Chemical product was used the resurrect the limestone luster of the neglected Park Avenue building.

After 70 years of dirt build-build up on the limestone exterior, it was time to initiate a cleaning procedure for this luxury Park Avenue high rise.

For 15 years, AOI Waterproofing, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY, has successfully tackled numerous surface restorations of commercial buildings. On a recent project, Michael D'Egidio of AOI was assigned to clean the limestone exterior of a luxury Park Avenue high rise located in New York City's landmark district. The exterior had not been touched for 70 yearts and exhibited a build-up of oil, grease, dust and grime on the white lime stone.

D'Egidio needed to use a product that would remove the 70 years of dirt and restore the building to its original luster. The selection of Dumond Safe N' Easy Masonry Cleaner from Dumond Chemical, Inc. of New York, NY, proved itself and performed extremely well according to D'Egidio.

The product combines colloids and hyper-wetting agents to provide a super active cleaning action that lifts, separated and emulsifies all types of diet without acid, alkalines ot hazardous solvents. Dumond Safe N' Easy Masonry Cleaner has a biodegradable formula consisting of tiny particles that can combine with water to break up surface tension and penetrate and dissolve through the dirt.

According to Dumond Chemicals, this product will remove airborne dirt, carbon, exhaust residues, weather and other stains on limestone, concrete and cast stone surfaces. "It's free of solvents, acids and alkalines, lessening the likelihood that adjacent substrates will be harmed," stated D'Egidio. "It meets current EPA regulations without containment or wastewater collection.

With the use of brushes, the cleaner was applied to the 5,0000-square-foot (464.5 sq.m) limestone exterior and adhered well to the vertical surfaces. The gel sat for two hours and was then removed with a medium pressure water rinse. "The difference was amazing," stated D'Egidio. "With one application, the limestone went from grayish-brown to bright white." The restoration process took one week and D'Edigio has used Dumond Masonry Cleaner again on the sandstone facade of the Swedish consulate in New York City.
